Hotel St Moritz Queenstown - MGallery Collection

This stay at Queenstown’s Hotel St Moritz Queenstown - MGallery Collection was unforgettable because I accidentally experienced two different rooms—one without a view, and one upgraded to face the snowy mountains and lake. It taught me a valuable lesson: always check room type carefully when booking.

Travel Diary – Hotel St Moritz Queenstown - MGallery Collection

Planning the Trip

Months before departure, I booked Hotel St Moritz Queenstown - MGallery Collection for my family’s New Zealand holiday. I imagined us staying by the lake, admiring snow-capped mountains from the window. The price was reasonable, so I booked early, confident we’d enjoy the best scenery.

Arrival

From the airport to the hotel, we already saw the snowy peaks in the distance. At check-in, the lobby’s atmosphere and lake-side setting impressed us. Everyone was excited, ready to start our holiday.

First Room – Disappointment

The room itself was warm and comfortable:

  • Spacious bedroom with a big bed facing the TV.
  • Bathroom with modern design and proper dry/wet separation.
  • Sofa, tea table, and desk made it feel cozy.

But when I walked to the window, my heart sank. No lake view. No mountain view. Instead, the room faced rooftops and the street, where even pedestrians could look up and see us. I had assumed every room in a lakeside hotel would have a lake view—clearly my mistake.

Switching Rooms

I immediately went to the front desk to request a change. The staff explained that upgrading meant paying a supplement. For me, the view was worth it—this was my family’s first time in Queenstown, and I wanted them to enjoy the best. After negotiation, the manager agreed to a discounted upgrade.

Second Room – The Dream View

When we entered the new room, everything changed. From the window, we could see:

  • Snowy mountains covered in white, like a fairy tale.
  • Lake Wakatipu shimmering below, peaceful and beautiful.

The atmosphere was magical. My family was delighted, and I felt relieved that I had insisted on the upgrade.

Reflection

This experience taught me a precious lesson:

  • Always check room type carefully when booking, especially if the view matters.
  • Don’t assume a lakeside hotel means every room faces the lake.
  • If possible, confirm with the hotel before arrival.

We were lucky there was availability to switch rooms. During peak season, that might not have been possible.

Final Thoughts

Our stay at Hotel St Moritz Queenstown - MGallery Collection combined comfort, elegance, and unforgettable scenery. The upgraded room gave us the Queenstown experience I had dreamed of—snow mountains outside the window, lake views that felt timeless. It turned a small mistake into a memorable story, one that I’ll always remember when booking hotels in the future.
